Ryan Batchelor MP

Ryan Batchelor is Labor’s State Member for the Southern Metropolitan Region, representing the inner southern, inner eastern and bayside suburbs of Melbourne.

First elected in November 2022, Ryan is a member of the Legislative Council. He serves in key Parliamentary roles including:

  • Chair, Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee

  • Deputy Chair, Legislative Council Legal and Social Issues Committee

  • Member, Integrity and Oversight Committee

  • Chair, Select Committee on Victoria’s Recreational Native Bird Hunting Arrangements

Ryan grew up and went to school in Southern Metro. He is passionate about ensuring the people of Southern Metropolitan have access to secure jobs, reliable transport, good schools and healthcare.

Before entering politics, Ryan worked as a public servant, political adviser, and a policy researcher.

During the Rudd-Gillard Federal Labor Government, Ryan served as Director of Policy in the Office of Prime Minister Julia Gillard MP, as Chief of Staff to Minister Jenny Macklin MP, and as senior adviser to Deputy Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese MP.

As a public servant, Ryan worked in the Department of Premier and Cabinet from 2015 until 2019 as a senior executive in a range of portfolios including on the response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence, public sector governance and reform, and in justice and community safety.

Ryan was the Victorian Executive Director at the McKell Institute from 2020 until 2022.

Ryan has a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Political Science from the University of Western Australia, a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University, and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Cambridge.
